The science of learning is the body of research on how humans actually acquire knowledge and judgment: how understanding is constructed rather than transferred, how expert thinking can be made visible to novices, and how memory, motivation, and environment shape what sticks. This pillar collects the Initiative's work on that research, restored from its archive and read again in 2026.

The place to start is the restored flagship, Cognitive Apprenticeship: Making Thinking Visible, the 1991 argument by Collins, Brown, and Holum that schooling hid the very thinking it meant to teach.
